During the Canada-Kazakhstan and Canada-Germany games in the World Junior Hockey Championships, Pierre Maguire and Gord Miller mentioned that they would like to see the tournament go from a 10 team tournament to 8 teams. Their reason: Its not nice to have Canada and other hockey powerhouses destroying the also rans such as Kazakhstan, Latvia, etc etc etc. I see their idea, but I would love to see a 10 or 12 team tournament. My reason: The kids get to visit other countries, play in front of huge crowds, meet new people, have the chance to play in front of scouts and play against future NHL stars. Sure Canada destroyed Kazakhstan 15-0. They just beat Germany 5-1. 10 years ago Germany would have fell victim to a score like Kazakhstan. I think that playing against competitive countries like Canada and the USA has made the Germans a tough team to play. I know speaking for myself that I love watching the underdog countries play. 15-0 game and the tiny Kazak forward Mikhail Lazorenko lowered the boom on one half of Canada's towers of power Tyler Myers. Lazorenko is 5'5 and 148 pounds (so they say, but that is generous) Myers, a monster. 6'7 and over 200 pounds. The end result, Myers on his ass in the corner, Lazorenko on his feet. Beautiful.
The big boys Miller and Maguire say 8 teams, I say 10-12, hell make it 16. The boys can travel, play hockey, get cheered for. That would make my day, I am sure its a highlight for them. Sure no one likes to lose, let alone 15-0, but look at the first game. Canada crushed the Czech Republic 8-1. Last time I checked, the Czechs were a pretty good hockey team.
Thats it for now, I have to hurry, Cool Runnings is starting!
